The
development
of
curriculum
within
the
Middle
School
is based
on the
understanding
that all
individuals
have
distinct
learning
styles
that
influence
their
ability
to
learn,
process,
practise
and
retain
new and
different
information.
Individual
learning
is
achieved
by a
combination
of the
student's
own self
assessment
in
combination
with a
diverse
range of
differentiated
assessment
by their
teachers
and
peers.
All
students
in the
Middle
School
are
required
to have
a
notebook
computer,
and
Information
&
Communications
Technology
is
integrated
into all
areas of
the
curriculum.
Students
can
access
their
assignments
and
homework
online
by way
of our
‘Learning
Point’
learning
management
system.
This
means
that
parents,
too, are
able to
keep
track of
the
deadlines
and
assignments
their
child
has to
complete.
Year 7
At Year
7, all
students
complete
a core
program
of
English,
Mathematics,
Science,
Humanities
(History
and
Geography),
a
language
(French
or
Chinese),
Physical
Education,
Music,
Drama,
Art
(including
ceramics),
Design
Technology
and
Living &
Faith (a
subject
combining
religious
education,
health
and
personal
development).
During
Term 3,
all Year
7s
participate
in the
‘Night
of the
Notables’
project.
Each
student
selects
and
researches
a
historically
important
individual
and then
presents
their
findings
‘in
character’.
Students
learn
the
skills
of
researching,
summarizing,
documenting
the
important
and
relevant
information
and then
expressing
it all
in their
own
words.
Several
hundred
parents
and
friends
have the
opportunity
to meet
and
question
our
Notables.
It is a
really
enjoyable
evening
that is
shared
by
students
and
their
families.
At the
end of
Year 7
students
choose
their
Year 8
and 9
electives
from a
range of
Semester
units in
Performing
Arts and
Art,
Design &
Technology.
All
students
must
complete
at least
one unit
from
each
category.
Year 8
The Year
8 core
includes
English,
Mathematics,
Science,
Humanities
(History,
Geography
and
Civics),
French
or
Chinese,
Physical
Education,
Information
Technology
and
Living &
Faith.
The Year
8 Mt Baw
Baw
experience
is a
unique
school
program.
Students
work to
complete
a self
designed
research
task
focusing
on a
chosen
aspect
of the
Baw Baw
Plateau.
The
program
includes
our
special
peer
mentoring
relationship
with
Noojee
Primary
School.
Along
with
combined
sporting
and
cultural
activities,
our
students
have
helped
to teach
the
Noojee
Primary
students.
During
Term 3
our Year
8
students
present
‘Personal
Best
Night’:
a
presentation
of
personal
achievement/participation
in
either
academic,
co-curricular
or
community
activities.
Students
act as
the
Master
of
Ceremonies
and
support
each
other in
a range
of
delivery
styles.
Pre-Senior
(Year 9)
In the
core
curriculum
at the
School,
there is
a
particular
emphasis
on
health
and
nutrition,
leadership
and
community.
Students
are
collectively
responsible
for the
cleanliness
of the
Pre
Senior
Centre.
There
are
extensive
opportunities
for
students
to
exercise
leadership
within
the year
group,
running
assemblies,
activities
and year
group
functions.
There
is, of
course,
a
continuing
emphasis
on
academic
achievement,
with a
particular
goal of
getting
rid of
‘busy
work’
tasks,
in
favour
of tasks
that
require
more
complex
thought,
with the
aim of
stimulating
and
challenging
students. |
