The Robert Barr-Smith Foundation was established in 1915 on the death of businessman and philanthropist Robert Barr-Smith. Scottish-born Mr Barr-Smith pioneered the opening of outback Australia, held pastoral leases in three states and shares in copper mines. He was a renowned philanthropist in his lifetime and at his death left £40,000 (the equivalent of more than $3 million today) to charity.
The trust fund is explicit about how the money must be used. This annual scholarship is open to male students only from Victoria who will be entering Year 7. Applicants may not be existing students of Peninsula Grammar and should be from a family that would otherwise not be able to afford the School’s fees.
Students who register for the ACER scholarship program are eligible to apply for the Barr-Smith Scholarship, bearing in mind that this is a means-tested scholarship. Applicants are not required to sit the ACER examination to apply for this scholarship, but may wish to do so.
